NCETM's Mastering Number

Cannon Lane began the Mastering Number project with the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) in 2021. The project focuses on supporting the teaching of basic maths skills in our school. It was designed to help children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 to embed a good understanding of number. The aim, over time, is that children will leave Key Stage 1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number.

Over the year, the children experienced a range of resources and representations, including a small abacus-like piece of equipment called a rekenrek. Bitesized lessons were implemented into the school day, centred around the development of mathematical talk, subitising and variation within maths. These lessons continue to take place daily.

Here are some examples of the images children will use to subitise.
