Just before half term, we celebrated STEM Week across the school. The theme for this year, in line with British Science Week, was ‘Change and Adapt.’
After some informative assemblies by our STEM subject leaders, which introduced the theme to the children, the children got stuck into a whole host of activities.
In English, each phase dove deep into a topic connected to STEM. These lessons involved using the internet safely to research information. Then, each class ended the week with speeches or presentations to their peers. Year 5 also had a visit from Mr Patel (5G parent), who shared his experience of STEM within his job and the impact of STEM on the world today.
In Maths, each year group took part in a sequence of finance-based lessons. These ranged from exploring how to save, where Reception painted piggy banks, to looking at different transactions, where Year 4 created their own bank notes.
Finally, the most talked about activity. Our DT/Science topic, explored ‘Farming for the Future’. Every year group aspired to be problem-solvers and they were tasked with finding a solution for a problem that was occurring with farm animal shelters or fencing. Each class were given a range of materials to create a prototype of their shelter or fence design. The material included: wire, wood, felt and cushion stuffing.
A huge thank you to those that supported our STEM week this year, from SD Timber for cutting 480 pieces of wood and Mr. Patel to the Cannon Lane staff and children for approaching the week with such enthusiasm.
