History

Our Vision: At Cannon Lane children enjoy learning history whereby exciting cross-curricular links are made to other subjects, and regular school excursions help inspire and engage them.

A high-quality history education will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain's past and that of the wider world. It should inspire pupils' curiosity to know more about the past. Teaching should equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments and develop perspective and judgement.

AIMS

All children should be provided with opportunities and be encouraged to:

  • Know and understand the history of the British Isles as a coherent, chronological narrative.
  • Know and understand significant aspects of the history of the wider world.
  • Gain and deploy a historically grounded understanding of abstract terms.
  • Understand historical concepts such as continuity and change, cause and consequence.
  • Understand the methods of historical enquiry, including how evidence is used.

History at Cannon Lane

Year 6 World War One Day - 13th October 2025

Year 6 had a fantastic day learning all about World War One to contribute to their History unit in Autumn 1. An engaging and informative workshop was led where children were introduced to many World War One artefacts including uniforms, helmets and decommissioned rifles from both the British and German armies. They also saw posters and newspapers from the time, as well as different food products that were rationed. In classes, the children did a carousel of different activities including learning war strategy through Battleships and Nine Men's Morris, an interactive quiz, and an expert talk on how World War One started and its effects.

Black History Month - October 2025

The theme of Black History Month 2025 was Standing Firm in Power and Pride. At Cannon Lane, children have been introduced to many Black British heroes who have stood firm and stood up for their beliefs including Beryl Gilroy, Olaudah Equiano, Malorie Blackman, Doreen Lawrence and Paul Stephenson. In lessons, children have learnt about different aspects of Black British History including sport, music and technology. In the above montage you will see some of the Black British heroes children have been learning about and some of the amazing work that they have produced.
